General questions about tea
How do I brew different types of tea?
Different teas need slightly different brewing temperatures
and times to bring out their best flavor. Here's how to get it right:
Black tea: 95°C, 2 minutes.
Green tea: 75-80°C, 1-2 minutes.
White tea: 75-80°C, 2 minutes.
Rooibos: 95°C, 2 minutes.
Herbal and fruit infusions: 95°C, 2-5 minutes.
Always use fresh water and let it cool a little before brewing green or white tea. You'll also find detailed instructions on the side of every Nordqvist tea pack and in the product descriptions on our website.
Do all teas contain caffeine?
No, they don't. Black, green and white tea all contain caffeine naturally, since they're made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. Herbal teas and rooibos, on the other hand, are caffeine-free, because they aren't true teas, they're infusions made from other plants.
Our range includes both caffeinated and caffeine-free options for every moment.
How many calories are in tea?
Tea itself is virtually calorie-free. A regular cup of black, green or white tea without sweetener or milk contains 0-2 kilocalories per cup. Added flavorings don't add any meaningful energy either.
The calorie count goes up if you add things like sugar, honey or milk. On its own, plain brewed tea is a wonderfully light and calorie-free choice.
Black, green and white tea: what's the difference?
Black, green and white tea all look and taste different, but they're actually made from the same plant: Camellia sinensis. The differences come from how the leaves are processed after harvesting. Oxidation level, leaf age and drying method all influence the color, flavor and caffeine content.
Black tea is fully oxidized, meaning the leaves are deliberately exposed to oxygen before drying. This chemical change darkens the leaves and deepens the flavor. Thanks to the oxidation, black tea has a bold, full-bodied and often slightly malty or spicy character.
Green tea isn't oxidized. Right after picking, the leaves are either steamed (Japanese style) or lightly pan-fired (Chinese style) to stop oxidation. That's why they keep their natural green color.
White tea is the least processed of all. Only the youngest buds and tender leaves are used, hand-picked and slowly air-dried without any oxidation. That's why the leaves keep their natural pale or silvery look, and the brewed cup is almost colorless or a very pale yellow.
How much caffeine is in a cup of tea?
The caffeine in a single cup of tea (around 200 ml) depends on the type of tea, how much leaf you use, and how it's brewed.
Black tea averages around 40-70 milligrams of caffeine per cup. It's the most oxidized of the three and is usually brewed in hotter water and for longer than other types, which is why it tends to carry the most caffeine.
Green tea has about 20-45 milligrams per cup. Since green tea isn't oxidized and is often brewed at slightly lower temperatures than black tea, the caffeine content is typically lower.
White tea is the most lightly processed type, and its caffeine content is usually low, around 15-30 milligrams per cup. That said, white tea is often made from very young buds and early leaves that are naturally high in caffeine, so some white teas can contain almost as much as green tea.
For comparison, a regular cup of coffee (around 200 ml) usually has 80-120 milligrams of caffeine, clearly more than any cup of tea.
Sustainability & environment
Do Nordqvist tea bags contain plastic?
No, they don't. All Nordqvist tea bags are plastic-free and don't contain any micro- or nanoplastics. Every bag is made from a natural, biodegradable paper material that's safe for you and for the environment.
How do I recycle Nordqvist tea packaging?
Recycling tea bags
All Nordqvist tea bags are biodegradable and can go into bio-waste. The tags and tea bag boxes are made of cardboard, so they belong in cardboard recycling, or can be disposed of by incineration. Most individual tea bag envelopes are made mainly of paper and can also be recycled as cardboard.
Recycling loose-leaf tea
The plastic packaging used for our loose-leaf teas can be recycled in plastic collection points. If plastic collection isn't available, the packaging can be disposed of as mixed waste and recovered as energy through incineration.

Quality & safety
What are Nordqvist tea flavorings made from?
The flavorings used in Nordqvist teas are primarily synthetic, which keeps them stable, hypoallergenic and suitable for a wide range of diets. Synthetic flavors don't contain common allergens, and they make sure every cup tastes consistently good.
If a product uses natural flavorings instead, that's always specifically noted on the packaging and in the product description.
Are Nordqvist teas suitable for vegetarians and vegans?
Yes, all Nordqvist teas are suitable for both vegetarians and vegans. Our teas don't contain animal-derived ingredients, and our flavorings are vegan, since they're synthetic and don't include any animal components.
You can enjoy your cup with peace of mind, our products work for many different diets. We still recommend checking the packaging for any product-specific notes.
Is the tea gluten-free?
Yes, tea is naturally gluten-free. Nordqvist teas don't contain any grain-based ingredients unless stated otherwise, so they fit into a gluten-free diet. Do check the ingredient list for any exceptions just to be sure.
Is it safe to drink tea during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Tea can be part of a balanced diet during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but caffeine intake is generally recommended to be limited. Black, green and white teas naturally contain caffeine, so it's worth keeping an eye on how much you're having.
Rooibos and most herbal infusions are caffeine-free, but not every herb is recommended for expecting or breastfeeding mothers. Ginger, for example, is familiar and widely used, but its use, especially in larger amounts, is best discussed individually with a healthcare professional.
If you're unsure, we always recommend checking with your doctor or midwife.
Our Nurmijärvi factory
Does Nordqvist have a factory outlet store?
Unfortunately we don't have a permanent factory outlet on-site, but our neighbor Pirjon Pakari (Kauppanummenkuja 3, 01900 Nurmijärvi, Finland) carries a wide selection of our products. We also host a Pop-Up shop at our factory a few times a year, selling selected items from our range at special prices. We always announce these Pop-Up events on our website and on our social media channels.
Can I visit the tea factory?
Unfortunately visits to our tea factory aren't possible at the moment. We follow strict food safety regulations that don't allow outside visitors into the production areas. We want to make sure our products stay safe and our hygiene standards stay high at all times.
