Making Cold Brew tea
Cold Brew is a refreshing and invigorating tea. It contains less caffeine and tannins than regular hot tea, but is still extremely easy to make.
It's worth taking the time to make cold brew tea, even if it doesn't require much effort. While hot tea can be brewed in minutes, good CB tea can be made in hours. Fortunately, once the ingredients are in place, the tea brews itself.
With this basic guide, you'll learn how to make Cold Brew tea like a pro. You'll also get tips for your own experiments. Drinking tea is all about taste, so the only limit is your own taste for tea! Take a special look at Hot & Cold tea, which is great served cold.
For 4 servings you will need:
- 6tl loose tea or 3 tea bags
- 1l room temperature water
With these measurements, you get a medium-strong tea. You can dilute the finished tea by simply adding water. If you find that the tea becomes too mild for your taste, add half as much tea to the next batch.
This will do the trick:
- Start making tea by measuring the tea into a pot or other container, preferably a glass one. You can use tea packed in any way you like: tea bags, tea leaves or matcha tea powder. - Pour water over it. When you use water at room temperature, the extraction process starts faster. You can also use cold water or even ice.
- Cover the container with a lid or cap. If you are using a press pot to make tea, put the lid on the pot and press the strainer part down about a centimetre.
- Allow the tea to stand at room temperature for 15-30 minutes before removing it to the fridge. This will speed up the brewing process. If you are in a hurry, you can also lift the tea directly into the fridge.
- The tea can be refrigerated for 8 to 20 hours, depending on the type of tea and how strong you want it. Roughly speaking, black tea takes the longest, green and white tea the least. You can taste the tea if you are unsure.
- When the extraction time is over, strain the tea. Some people pour the tea through a filter bag, but the strainer in the press pot itself is fine too.
- Pour the finished tea into glasses and enjoy as is. Chilled tea is usually already sweeter than hot tea. However, if you prefer, you can sweeten the tea with syrup.
- You can make a big batch of cold brew tea at once, as it will keep for 3-4 days in the fridge. It's best as soon as it's ready. And who could wait that long to get their hands on this delicious treat?
